"The Martyr" is basically one big metaphor for a relationship that isn’t working anymore. The battle of loving someone to death even when you know you aren’t meant to be together. The feelings of guiltiness every time you try to pull away, but also feeling like a terrible person when you try to pretend like everything’s okay. When something is on and off, it’s hard to differentiate light and dark, and it’s even harder to tell yourself when it’s time to stop. It’s a mess of emotions that simmer inside of you until you don’t know who you are anymore.
If someone is sacrificing themselves for a lover that’s already dying, then who’s to blame? Or better yet, who’s the martyr?
This song means a whole lot to me and it has some of my favorite lyrics I’ve ever written. I hope you love it!
